Please take the time to read this carefully and to understand any accompanying information.
I am a Ph.D. Candidate at the Faculty of Environmental Design, University of Calgary. The purpose of this research is to determine the mechanisms that Protected Areas (PA) in Canada and Mexico have on place for assessing their management practices.
There are three main aspects to evaluate:
§
What are the challenges managers face to assess management effectiveness?
§
What tools can help reduce conflicts due to competing objectives and enhance management effectiveness?, and
§
What are the similarities and differences in management needs and practices between a developed and a developing country?
Managers and stakeholders of protected areas will be interviewed or asked to participate in a survey regarding management of protected areas.
The research will be conducted in Canada and Mexico. The following methods are used:
i)
Literature/document review of current legislation and management policies for protected areas,
ii)
A case study in each country,
iii)
Interviews - using open-ended questionnaires- with key contacts (managers and stakeholders) related to the case studies, and
iv
A survey among stakeholder organizations interested in protected areas.
